(Why God won’t help me?)

During our lives, our fathers occasionally bail us out of bad situations of our own making. Perhaps picking us up from a party or gathering gone bad. Bringing us home intoxicated. Paying speeding tickets, and the list is endless. Many times worse infractions than listed. As we become Adults, these transgressions hopefully become less frequent and we grow into Healthy Adults. One of our lifetime’s greatest rewards is to hear our Father say “Great Job, how proud I am of you”.

During ‘childhood’ our fathers gave us everything we needed to succeed. As an Adult, your Father will most likely become much less forgiving and understanding.

Recently, I was thinking how nice it would be if God would just make everything right in my life. How easy it would be for him to remove negative thoughts, conflicts, habits, addictions and simply bring his Sheep into the fold. Why doesn’t he?

When Jesus fasted in the desert for forty days, I don’t believe God took pleasure in his hunger pangs. He took pleasure and was Proud of his Son for giving up something he strongly desired.  A Sacrifice to God with no request for help from God to easily achieve this end. God looked upon Jesus and declared how proud He was of his creation. God gave up some of his own Being and Power to create Jesus, the Universe, Man and all that fills it.  As an Homage,  should we not sacrifice to honor God?

When asking God to help you with a difficulty, such as, Dieting, Addiction urges or Monetary / Personal problems, are you making God Proud of his Child? I don’t believe we should expect God to stop the destructive habits we have created for ourselves. Don’t ask God to remove our urge to over eat, Drink excessively, Tobacco usage, engage in sexual immorality or to improve a situation we created ourselves.

Stop drinking alcohol excessively to show honor to God for the sacrifice He made to bring you into existence, and to show your worthiness to belong to a Proud Father and remain in his Protection.

God does not exist to please us and do our bidding. Rather, like a good son who makes his Father proud. We should Honor and Obey God’s commands and desires freely which brings Glory and Pride to God.

Let us remember We are made in the Image of the Most High, and God has already given us everything we need to be successful. A Father wouldn’t send a child out on a journey without providing the necessary provisions. We were born and raised with everything we needed to succeed and make our heavenly Father Proud.

God takes no pleasure in our pain or loss, but we should voluntarily give up unhealthy activities to show our honor and appreciation of God’s attention and sacrifice to sustain us throughout our lives. By our sacrifice we Honor God and possibly he will give us the greatest Gift, Understanding.

In conclusion, Let’s not ask God for easy solutions to problems we created ourselves. Ask for enlightenment. For things we can do to promote God’s Glory and make God Proud of Us.

By giving up our addictions and evil ways, we Glorify God who love us as a child made in his image.

Asking for something is superfluous. God already knows what each one of us needs and it is already in our arsenal of abilities.  Show God your desire to Honor Him by emulating him and sacrifice to lift others to Glorify God who loves you as a Child of God.

Pondering the much hyped ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI) demonstrated by computers of today, many people fear these creations will need strict limits to protect their Creators. AI will eclipse their Creators claim many.

Events similar to the Bible story of the Tower of Babylon. God and his Angels looked down on the rapid advancement of civilization and feared if left uninterrupted, His creation will be as powerful as himself. He therefore destroyed the tower of Babel, and scattered men and their languages to disrupt man’s steady march forward.

Early Star Trek fans remember the movie with the return of the Voyager probe which had merged with Alien technology. The probe had advanced so much it now was essentially God Like and ready to upload all it’s vast knowledge to mankind.

AI is feared that it will design more and more advanced versions of itself , and become God Like threatening its Creator as a useless appendage on its existence. The question occurs to me ‘Why’?
What will motivate AI to improve itself beyond its intended function. Does it experience Jealousy, Hate, Desires of Dominance. Competition is the main driving force of ‘progressional’ change. Without Leibniz there would not be Newton or calculus. As a youth, I became quite good at ‘Ping Pong’ as I had a Twin Brother and the competition was intense. The desire to Win, Dominate and Understand is solely a Human Trait.

When there are two colonies of Ants on a hill, each collects grains of sand and makes a pile to protect the entrance of their tunnel from flooding. They do not build better and better ant hills. They do not understand the concept of ‘Why’. Without the Devine spark of Why, no progress will occur. They will not dig small canals to drain water away or seek stronger building materials. They have no desire to improve.

Some say AI will be programmed to improve itself and rewrite its own programming. Perhaps some incremental improvements will occur, but an entire new fabrication method will not occur. Just as ants will always use sand grains for their constructions.

Without the Devine Ability to ask Why? No threat from a Rogue AI advancement exists as it has no desires or wants.

Who hasn’t enjoyed Jules Verne great novel ‘ Journey to the center of the world’. As a child this book inspired my imagination. Imagine finding a passage way thru the crust of the earth, down down down one goes.  Passing thru prehistoric ages and finally reaching the very center of the earth where their magnetic compass no longer worked.

I was thinking about such a travel and the location of the center of the earth. Would the Magnetic poles no longer apply? Could lava force a return to the surface in a volcano, such as in the novel.  If it were possible to construct a spherical room at the center of the earth, I believe the most striking difference from the surface would be the absence of gravity.  Think about it, We are all drawn ‘down’ towards the center as the center of mass of all the matter under us. At the center,in our spherical room, one would be drawn equally in all directions by all the surrounding matter and hence weightless.  We all think we can achieve ‘weightlessness’ by going into orbit, but realistically in orbit one is still drawn to the center of the earth. In orbit, one is always falling. The reason we feel weightless is the fall is not sensed as the craft moved forward such that the earth surface fell away from the craft the same distance one fell.

The only place in the Universe where the effects of earth’s gravity is ZERO is the center of the Earth.. Everywhere else in the Universe the gravity can be detected.

My brother in law brags how he gets 100k miles between changing his brake pads. Modern brake pads generally last about 50k miles. This is a remarkable feat but what does he do different? Brakes of course slow down the forward kinetic energy of the car. To reduce speed the kinetic energy of forward motion has to be converted to heat by the friction of the pads and rotors. The formula for kinetic energy is E=mass x velocity squared. Lets consider this. To slow down from 90 mph to 60 mph, assuming mass is 1(car) the kinetic energy change is the difference between 90 squared and 60 squared or 8100 – 3600 = 4500 energy units (EU) of heat. So if is one is driving at 90mph and pushes the brakes to slow down to 60 mph, the brakes wear down or heat up 4500 EU.

Now if you are driving at 30mph on a city street and apply the brakes to stop, Then you are dissipating 30 squared or 900 EU to reach 0 speed. Therefore slowing down from 90 mph to 60mph is 6 times as wearing on the brakes as one time stopping from 30 mph.

Lets consider a more modest highway speed change. Lets analyse slowing from 60 mph to 50 mph. By the same method this is the difference between 3600 EU and 2500 EU or 1100 EU. Of note, slowing from 60 mph to 50 mph is more wearing on the brakes than going from 30 mph to a stop (900 EU).

Going back to my brother in law, he must never touch the brakes when moving more than 30 mph.

A Heavenly message

The world was electrified! Bill Mason Phd had found a clear message from God.
Bill Mason was one of the leading quantum propulsion engineers on the Planet. For years he has worked on a Quantum drive that took advantage of the very fabric of space-time. To move objects faster and then much faster than the speed of light. With conventional drives the speed of light is not approachable as the energy to achieve this approaches infinity. With the quantum drive, it was realized that time and space flows by in quanta or discrete units of distance and time. There is a smallest unit of time that cannot be divided further. The same is true with distance. When an object moves along a line it actually moves in a jumpy movement. The jumps are too small to see but are present. A fast moving object may jump a few thousand distance units in a unit of time. A slow mover may move a few dozen distance units. Think of a checker moving across a board. At one moment it is still in a corner square, after the passage of a time unit, it disappears from the first square and appears in the next square again motionless. This explains how electrons can be in one energy orbital and instantaneously appear in another. Never in between.
Bill Mason was one of the pioneers who realized that Gravity folded the space time fabric much like a ravine is folded into the earth. One could walk down the ravine and up the other side at a conventional pace or simply skip across the top and cover the distance in almost no time. That you could selectively fold space-time was the Genius of William H. Mason. He found a mass effect could be generated by the crossing of two specialized energy beams. It was as if a black hole of nearly infinite density and mass the size of a water molecule could be created at will anywhere and for any length of time. The gravity from the mass effect could be placed over massive objects and seemingly make them float over the earth. In space the mass effect could bend space time allowing objects to move a massive distance in an instant. The farthest reaches of the universe were now reachable.
Religion had always been in the psyche of man. The origins of the world were first pondered in mythology and later various prophets and shamen claimed to visit the spirit world. Miracles were claimed in ancient times but the modern world seemed devoid of such proof until now. Science was agnostic, neither verifying or refuting the existence of God. Science seemed to indicate that the origin of the universe was established in a ‘Big Bang’. Basically an unimaginable explosion of mass and energy which created all the Galaxies, Stars and Suns in existence. It has been expanding in size from that moment which was the first moment in time for our universe.
Bill Mason was the son of a Pastor. He was raised believing in a Supreme Being but like most had some doubts. He excelled in Mathematics and Physics. Now he had the tools to prove whether Heaven existed or not. His team designed a quantum probe, that could travel to the very edge of the Universe and peer out. As though heaven had a window and one could look in from the outside. Thousands of these probes were launched in every direction to the very edges of our Universe. Now after months of waiting they returned with their images. Each one would have to be carefully downloaded and assembled next to each other to form the tapestry of heaven. The excitement was palpable. The image will have profound effect on the behavior of the individual. If a supreme being is confirmed no longer can the individual live his life only for himself in a dog eat dog manner. The leaked reports were tantalizing that indeed a message from the Supreme Being was discovered. Analyzing it’s meaning may take years or generations, but a clearly artificial message was being assembled by the team. It appears a Written Sign just beyond our universe was found.

Gun Control

I was watching my favorite movie last night ‘Casablanca’. In one throw back scene a Gestapo Motor car with loud speakers drives into the heart of Paris, and boldly announces that the Nazi’s will be entering Paris tomorrow and they expect everyone to stand outside and wave German Flags… Can you imagine if that Gestapo Motor Car drove into a US town or city with such a declaration? A hail of bullets would rain from every roof top on the invading force. No Military on earth could invade a city or town without first killing all the inhabitants. It’s because we are armed.

I don’t understand the emotional diatribes that occur about gun control on both sides of the debate.  Of course it is beyond sad when an innocent person is killed or injured by another person with a gun. We all grieve for the family of the victim. Everyone wants to keep guns out of the hands of those who willingly want to injure or kill another person. If a criminal or impaired person obtains a gun everyone would agree the individual ,that allowed the evil doer to obtain the weapon, needs to be found and severely punished.  Only legal citizens who pass a backround check should be allowed to own weapons.

When you see a country such as Mexico or Columbia with rampant drug lords and corruption. They have no hope as the population is unarmed. The ‘Wild’ west wasn’t settled with laws. It was an armed population that killed anyone threatening them. With our FBI and CIA out of control, can we afford to be disarmed?

It was raining quite hard this Spring. Flood warning abounded. The newsman indicated that during the worst of the rain, an absolute downpour, one inch fell in one hour.

For Noah it must have been much worse. Much worse than even movies about the event portray.

Genesis 7:19 indicates

The water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains everywhere under the heavens were covered.

20 The water prevailed 30 feet higher than the highest mountain. and all the mountains were covered. 

21 All flesh that moved on the earth perished, birds and cattle and beasts and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind was destroyed.

Well how much rain is that?

Mount Everest at 29,029 ft is the highest mountain on Earth.  The math is quite straightforward. It rained for forty 24 hour periods.

29,000/40 == 725 feet per day.

24 hours per day == 30 feet per hour.

12 inches per foot == 360 inches per hour.

Basically Noah’s rain had to be like standing under a waterfall which was pouring down everywhere. It was 360 times worse than the worst heavy rain we experienced this year which last 1-2 hours and caused widespread damage. His deluge lasted 40 days in a waterfall.

Now that’s a Storm!!

This morning I was sitting and enjoying a cigar in one of my favorite places on the Rock River. I love watching the flowing water moving rapidly off the shore and drawing the stagnant near shore water into the stream. Reminds me of what Bernoulli must have observed when he noted that rapidly flowing fluid has a lower Pressure than stagnant fluid. So the stagnant ,higher pressure, fluid is pushed into the stream (not pulled). It is the reason a Canard shaped wing with rapidly flowing air on the dorsum is pushed up by the higher pressure ,slower moving, air under the wing. Very obvious to a smoker in a car. When the window is cracked exposing the high pressure stagnant air in the car to the lower pressure rapidly moving air outside, the smoke is rapidly pushed out of the car into the streaming air.

I digress though. It’s remarkable how many different types of life exist on earth and one wonders why some were omitted. The mythical Unicorn probably never existed ,but one has to wonder why??  Antlers and horns are very common in the Mammal and Reptilian world. They have several very useful functions that promote the basic drives of life. Specifically Survival, Mating and Feeding. Generally Horns and Antlers are primarily used in large Mammals as a Mating right. With the absence of antlers, two large Bucks would fight to death over a female and in fact both would probably be fatally injured in such a fight so no reproduction would occur. In Nature the two bucks bump Antlers and ‘size’ up the other and the lesser retreats without injury. Horses would greatly benefit from the presence of a Horn. Their current defense against Predators is simply stomping and kicking. When mating two stallions will fight to death. The presence of a Horn would be a great survival benefit.

So I ask again. Why are there no Unicorns.???

 

My Oldest Son, Michael, was born today March 30th 1983. Most Father’s relate the birth of their child is quite traumatic on them ,and Oh My how well everything went. Mine was a nightmare. Definitely one of the most ten worst days of my life.

I was a Captain and Family Doctor in the United States Air Force. The Air Force had graciously paid for my medical school, and I was repaying my obligation as a physician.

My Wife, Diane, joined me in a 3 year stent at WurtSmith AFB in Michigan. WurtSmith was considered a remote base as the nearest shopping mall was more than 100 miles away. We were stationed in Oscoda MI. Oscoda is a town about 1 mile long with the East Border on Lake Huron. Lake Huron is always cold and nearly Frozen. Nobody swims there but the fishing is awesome. One year, Ice fishing, I fell through the ice and survived but that is for another post. Michael was not conceived when Diane and I entered the Air Force in 1980 and she became friends with some of the other Doctors and Physician Assistants (PA) that staffed the hospital at the Base. The hospital was small. Maybe 20-30 beds with a few nurses and many airmen who served as orderlies. The orderlies generally had no medical experience and I would love to transgress the story line and tell you about a Foley catheter removed without letting the balloon down, but again perhaps later.  I worked in the Family medical unit and saw Active service and their family for run of the mill problems. Dr James Young was a Captain and Board Certified Family Doctor of the Clinic and Diane saw him and trusted him She was Pregnant in our last year there and she decided she wanted Dr Young to Deliver the child. Well great. Our First Daughter, Kimberly, was already three years old. She was 8′ 3 ounces and basically walked out without any difficulty. Labor was a few hours and no problems at all. So here I am a physician and my wife wants a Family Doctor to deliver the baby. Should be a breeze. Hell Goats deliver in the field every day! We did at that time have two Obstetricians, but no Diane wants Jim Young MD.

Well the day arrived. Nothing unusual having some contractions.

We enter the Hospital and Jim Young MD comes in and everything is progressing well. He thinks the baby will be large but no problems. Understand I am a ‘Doctor’ , but I finished Medical School and only one year of an Internal Medicine Residency. I was planning on finishing my training in Surgery after the Air Force. I was qualified to treat the run of the mill family practice issue but not remove an appendix or fix a hernia or deliver a baby.

Well time passes and Diane is fully dilated and time for Michael to come out. She is trying for hours and is clearly completely exhausted despite her young age. The baby is stuck. Now the fetal monitors start flashing RED. DECELERATIONS, MECONIUM PRESENT REACHING CRITICAL LEVELS!!!

I’m standing there helpless, wondering how I could be this Stupid, not to be in the best place in the world for my baby to be born as a physician I should have known better!

Decelerations means the heart rate of the baby is dangerously low and  the baby is low on oxygen and dying. Meconium is fetal poop that the baby releases into the amniotic water when it is dying.

I’m standing there looking at this when Dr Young looks at me and asks, “John, Do you know how to put Forceps on the baby?! I step back and yell, NO I DON’T! I HAVE NEVER DONE THAT!

Fortunately, a young airman by the name of Airman Banks was nearby. Dr Young told him to “Go Find Dr Lawrence the Obstetrician and tell him we have an emergency.” Airman Banks left the room and was gone some time. I was babbling against the wall in shock at my stupidity. Finally Airman Banks came back in the room and walked up to Dr Young. A few seconds passed and nothing was said and then Dr Young inquired if he had found Dr Lawrence. He replied “No, but I left a note on his desk. ”

I did fall against the wall and ran out to the ER desk which was nearby. I grabbed a microphone and called overhead that Dr Lawrence was needed in the OR STAT STAT STAT!

Fortunately Dr Lawrence was there and came and had the baby out in about 30 seconds. The initial Apgars where zippity dodah but the second set was much better and Dr Lawrence had saved the lives of Michael and Diane despite the stupidity of the Father.

Michael is now turning 34 and has 3 brilliant sons and a beautiful wife and he is an Electrical Engineer.

When we travel from one point on the globe to another point, we frequently go through a ‘time zone’ such that travelling east to west the clock moves back one hour. Seems quite rational but the entire Global picture is a bit more complex.

Lets imagine we are viewing the earth from northern stellar view.

Some interesting things are evident.

• There are 24 time zones corresponding with the hours of the day.
• Noon is always directly facing the sun and midnight is opposite on the Globe.
• The earth rotate towards the East, yet wind and weather come from the West so the atmosphere is rotating faster than the land mass on average.

At first glance this seems quite straight forward. So a ‘new day’ would always begin (Midnight) in the time zone furthest from the sun and the day would be half over when the earth rotated to the time zone closest to the sun (Noon). Now though there is another complexity to consider and that is the International Date line which runs roughly through the middle of the Pacific ocean. So if one travels East to West and passes through the international date line the date is advanced 24 full hours. Hence a full day is lost or gained depending on which way you cross the date line.

Trying to put the whole picture together, I find it is best to imagine the earth is rotating inside a fixed shell of see through plastic timezones which are fixed in space with noon facing the sun and midnight opposite. 6PM would be due east and 6AM do west. Now lets imagine the earth has rotated such that the Pacific ocean and the Date line is in the Noon slot facing the sun. The 1PM slot would be east and it could be Monday at 1PM while the 11AM slot would be one slot west and it would be Tuesday at 11AM. At this precise time, when the date line is in the noon slot, The earth is half Monday and half Tuesday.

Now if the earth rotates another 6 hours so the international date line is in the 6PM slot, Now only 6 hours of Monday is present on the earth. Namely the 6 time slots from 6PM to Midnight. However complicating this is that on the east side of the date line it is Monday at 6PM and on the west side Tuesday also at 6PM or a full 24 hours difference.

To complete this, lets rotate the earth so the Date line is in the midnight slot away from the sun. The Easterly 1AM slot would be Tuesday and the 11PM slot would be Monday and all seems normal .
